Dry eye is a common situation that happens when your eyes don't make enough tears or tears evaporate too quickly. It causes the eyes to dry out, or become red, swollen, itchy or even more dangerous symptoms.

1. Eye lubricating therapies

Some normal to heavy cases of dry eye can often be treated using lubricating eye treatments, including an eye drop, gel and oil eye drop.

These lubricants are often called artificial tears because they replace lost water tear in the eye membranes. However, they do not contain the antibodies, vitamins and nutrients that normal tears have. Most lubricants can be purchased without a prescription from a pharmacist and can be easily purchased at pharmacies or specialty stores.

There are many different types of eye drops and gels you easily meet on the market, so you should try to find the one that works effectively for you. Normally, most OTC eye drops products are not harmful to your eyes.

Sometimes you have to use two or three different kinds of product compounds to treat the dry eyes effectively. However, if any signs of allergy or irritation happen, you should see a hospital or an ophthalmologist for appropriate measures.

2. Oily eye drops

Eye drops that replenish oil reduce evaporation from the surface of the eye are also increasingly used. Oil-based eye drops are especially helpful if you have pneumonia or dry eye syndrome caused by your tears evaporating too quickly.

3. Eye ointment

Eye ointments can also be used to help the eyes moist overnight. Tears can also evaporate while you sleep with half-closed eyes. You should use the ointment overnight, avoid using it during the day because it can cause blurred vision. You should also not use the ointment while wearing contact lenses.

Have you ever looked in the mirror and saw that your eyes were red, swollen, tired,...? Those symptoms are the warning signs of health problems that you have or may have.

1. Red eyes

Red eye is the most common human’s eye problem. It presents as a streak of blood on the white part of the eye, however, it is ordinarily just a bruise under the surface of the eye. These are called subconjunctival hemorrhage and your eyes will get well after a few weeks.

If your eyes are red, itchy, and watery, it could be an allergy: environmental (seasonal) allergies, or allergies to products you've used.

Eye drops can help ease the redness, watery eyes and antihistamine eye drops will make the itching end. Nevertheless, you should see your doctor if the condition doesn't go away after more than 10 days.

2. Pink eye disease

This is an acute inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is characterized by itchy, red eyes and white or yellow discharge. It is usually caused by a virus and lasts a week to 10 days. Acute conjunctivitis can start in one eye and go to the other eye.

If you suspect you have acute conjunctivitis, see the doctor for the most accurate diagnosis. Acute conjunctivitis can be very contagious, so wash your hands a lot and change face wipes often to ensure eye hygiene.

3. Dry eyes

People who work on computers, mobile phones, books or TV for long periods of time can experience very uncomfortable, dry eyes because they have not blinked enough. Sometimes, the phenomenon of dry eyes is also caused by hormones.

Using artificial tears several times per day can have a moisturizing effect on the eyes. However, you should see a doctor if the dry eye still does not improve after a period of time using eye drop. In addition, certain diseases such as arthritis or some medications you are taking can also cause dry eyes.

4. Redness on the eyelids

Eyes can naturally secrete oil. If the oil glands become blocked, they can cause an infection in the eyelash follicle, leading to a painful, red swelling on the eyelid known as a stye.

To ease the pain, place a warm, moist gauze on the softest part of the bump 5 or 6 times a day. Alternatively, take a few more prescription antibiotics, steroid ointments, or even surgery to reduce the damage.

5. Eye fatigue

When you look at a computer screen all day, your eyes can get tired. Take a break and practice the 20/20/20 rule. That is, looking at an object at least 20 feet (7 meters) away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.

Another cause of eye strain is dry eyes. Then, try a few artificial tears to improve this eye strain.

Do you find it hard to see distant objects like writing on the blackboard in class but easily read a book up close? You are most likely near-sighted. So the problem is, how to treat myopia?

1. Causes of Myopia

The cause of myopia is that the eyeball axis is too long, causing light rays to focus at a point in front of the retina instead of entering exactly to the retina. That makes us unable to see objects clearly. In addition, the disease can also occur because the cornea or lens is too curved compared to the eyeball. In some cases, myopia occurs due to a combination of the above causes.

Myopia usually begins at an early age, and children whose parents are nearsighted have an increased risk of congenital myopia. Usually, as the person with myopia gets older, the nearsightedness also stops. However, there are still cases that continue to progress with age such as:

  • High myopia: This is a severe form of myopia, in which the eyeballs grow more than normal. Not only make it difficult to see things at a distance, high myopia can also make you more likely to get other conditions like cataracts and glaucoma.

  • Degenerative myopia: also known as pathological myopia and it is inherited. The eyeballs of people with myopia degenerate very quickly and cause severe myopia. Degenerative myopia usually occurs in adolescence and gets worse as you reach adulthood. People with degenerative myopia have a higher risk of retinal detachment, the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the eye, and glaucoma.

2. Diagnosis of myopia

Myopia is diagnosed with a basic eye exam, which includes a refractive evaluation and an eye exam. Usually, the therapist uses different instruments and asks you to look through several lenses to check your distance and near vision.

Moreover, to check the health of your eyes, your doctor will put eye drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils. This can make your eyes more sensitive for several hours after the eye exam is done. The dilation allows the doctor to see a wider view of the inside of your eye.

3. Myopia treatment

The goal of nearsightedness treatment is to improve vision by helping to focus light on your retina through the use of corrective lenses or refractive surgery. Myopia management also includes regular monitoring for complications, including glaucoma, cataracts, lacrimation and retinal detachment, and damage to the central retina.

Myopia can be corrected with refractive surgery, but children under 18 are not old enough to have surgery. Therefore, wearing glasses is the most optimal treatment for nearsightedness.

Some treatments for nearsightedness include:

  • Eyeglasses: This is a simple, safe way to treat nearsightedness and also the most economical solution.

  • Contact lenses: There are many types of contact lenses available in the market with different materials and designs. Consult a contact lens specialist to choose the best one for your eyes

  • Refractive surgery: An eye surgeon uses a laser beam to reshape the cornea. After surgery, you may need to wear eyeglasses for a period of time. Refractive surgery can cause some side effects, you should tell your doctor right away when you have unusual signs.

4. Some home remedies for nearsightedness

Once you become nearsighted, you can't get rid of the symptoms, but you can reduce the impact of myopia on your health and life:

  • Get your eyes checked: Get your eyes checked regularly, even if your eyes don't have any problems.

  • Manage chronic conditions: Certain conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can affect your vision if you don't get the right treatment.

  • Protect your eyes from the sun: Wear sunglasses to block the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays on your eyes.

  • Prevent eye injury: Wear protective eyewear when mowing, painting, welding, etc. or using other products with toxic fumes.

  • Eat foods that are good for eye health: Try to eat lots of green vegetables, vegetables and fruits. Increase foods that are high in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids like tuna and salmon.

  • Do not smoke: Smoking has negative effects on health, including bad effects on eye health.

  • Use enough light: When you need to read something, make sure your eyes get enough light

  • Reduce eye strain: Apply the 20-20-20 rule when using a computer or reading for a long time - every 20 minutes of work, your eyes need to rest for 20 seconds and see a distance of 20 feet (7 meters).

  • Use artificial tears: Artificial tears can reduce dry eyes and eye strain - the cause of your nearsightedness.

Our eyes will easily get tired when we have to adjust a lot, such as when driving a long distance or gazing at computer screens and other digital devices for a long time.

Some symptoms of eye strain include:

- Eye pain, tired eyes, burning or itchy eyes

- Watery or dry eyes

- Blurred vision

- Neck, shoulder, back pain or headache

- Difficulty in concentrating and opening eyes

Eye strain can occur after focusing on a certain point for a long time.

Cause of eye strain

One of the biggest causes of eye strain is the daily use of digital devices for hours at a time. Several studies have shown that more than 87% of Americans use one or more digital devices for more than two hours a day. More than 76.5% of American children focus on screens for more than two hours a day.

Diseases caused by eye strain

Blue light can be harmful if you use digital devices for a long period of time without rest. This can lead to eye damage such as:

- Retinal diseases

- Cataract

- Age-related macular degeneration

- Sleep disorders

Maintaining eye health is crucial to reduce more serious vision problems that may occur in the future. You should have your eyes checked regularly, especially if you experience frequent or persistent eye strain.

Eye care solutions

When using the computer and looking at the computer screen, you must blink many times to wet your eyes. Give your eyes a reasonable rest, maintain the 20-20-20 method, that is, after 20 minutes looking at the computer screen, you need to look away about 20 feet (6m) for 20 seconds, so that eye muscles are relaxed. Between working hours, you should rest your eyes for about 10-15 minutes, gently massage the area around the eyes.

Sitting with appropriate posture, which means your eyes are about 50-60cm away from the screen, the center of the screen is about 10-20cm lower than the eyes. And you should sit so that your hands are parallel to the floor, your legs are perpendicular to the ground, your back is straight and keep your shoulders balanced.

Furthermore, vitamins A, E, B2, ... have a very good role in supplementing the eyes with nutrients to maintain vision. You should have a diet containing the above nutrients such as green vegetables, salmon, root vegetables such as carrots, strawberries, avocado, chili, etc.

Dry eye is common in people who work in workplaces, use PCs or have refractive errors. The following easy tips will help reduce dry eyes effectively.

When eyes are dry, daily activities will be negatively affected as well as eye health in the long run. Therefore, you can refer to the following simple tips to help avoid dry eyes.

  1. Blink eyes often

Every time we work on the computer, we often tend to focus on the screen and be attentive, which will lead to forgetting to blink for a long time. This is what causes dry eyes, and blinking repeatedly can help the tears to move around the entire eyeball. At the same time, it will help clean the eyes from dirt, foreign objects and keep the conjunctival and corneal surfaces healthy and clean.

  1. Cover your eyes with a warm towel

This is considered one of the most effective ways to soothe dry eyes. Warm water will soothe the eyes when they are tired or when they regulate a lot, and promote the formation of tears, helping the eyes to relax after a long day of tiring activities. You can follow these simple steps to improve dry eyes:

Step 1: Soak a face towel in hot water, then wring it out to get enough moisture.

Step 2: Apply it on your eyes for about 5-10 minutes.

Step 3: Rinse eyes with warm water.

For best results, you should do this 2-3 times a day.

  1. Adjust computer screen brightness

For office workers or people who often use computers, you should adjust the computer screen brightness as well as the device position to avoid focusing all your energy on the eyes and causing the eyes to adjust a lot. Place the computer at eye level or slightly lower, but not too much, and adjust the screen brightness just right.

According to a recent study, when you look at your computer for a long time, you blink less every minute. Therefore, you need to take short breaks when you have to work at the computer, blink more often and avoid looking at the computer screen during breaks. Blinking helps to moisten, increase the flow of tears, and reduce the feeling of eye strain. For every 1 hour of working on the computer, it is best to take a 10-minute break to relax your eyes.

  1. Eat foods rich in omega 3

A diet lacking in omega-3 fatty acids can lead to dry eyes. Therefore, you should increase your intake of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts to reduce the risk.

  1. Keep your eyes always clean

Keeping your eyes clean is very important to avoid dry eyes, especially when this condition occurs for a long time. Cleaning the eyelids helps to remove the dirt that accumulates over time, clogging the tear glands. If you wear makeup regularly, you should remove your eye makeup at the end of the day.
